Yume Koujou Doki Doki Panic was released exclusively in Japan in 1987 as a promotion for an event being held by Fuji Television called Yume Koujou (Dream Factory). It features an Arabian family who comes into possession of a magic book, the chapters of which become the setting for the game's stages.

After the family's twin children Poki and Piki are dragged into the book's pages by Mamu (known as Wart in Super Mario Bros. 2), Imajin, Lina, Mama, and Papa rush into the book to rescue them. Thus an adventure begins where each family member must progress through the game's 20 stages in order to achieve the true ending.

Shigeru Miyamoto, known best as the creator of the Super Mario Bros. series, also worked on Yume Koujou Doki Doki Panic. When it came time to bring Super Mario Bros. 2 to Western countries, Nintendo noted that the SMB2 Japan got for the Famicom Disk System was too difficult and too similar to the original Super Mario Bros., so they instead opted to create an improved version of Doki Doki Panic and market it in America and Europe as SMB2.

As a result of this, many things which have become staples of the Super Mario Bros. series were introduced to it as a result of this game swap. Shyguy, Birdo, Snifit, Ninji, and many other enemies all made their debut in Doki Doki Panic. Various character traits also made their debuts in the west's Super Mario Bros. 2, such as Luigi's ability to jump high (also featured in SMB2J) and Princess Peach's ability to float.

The western version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was much more than just a quick graphic swap of the main characters. It also featured improved animations for sprites and scenery, a new boss battle, improved music tracks, and more! On the flip side, the trip from east to west did unfortunately see the removal of the save feature, as well as the need to play through the game as all characters.

This video features gameplay of the original Yume Koujou Doki Doki Panic being played on an actual Famicom Disk System with the original disk card! If you've never seen where our Super Mario Bros. 2 came from, you'll be amazed by just what it originally looked like!
