Jay's Thoughts
In the 80's, arcades were dominated with games about space. Asteroids, Space Invaders, Space Wars... in the midst of all this came Donkey Kong, a game about an Italian carpenter named "Jump Man" who is desperately trying to save his girlfriend from a crazed gorilla (whom he may or may not have abused).
On paper, Donkey Kong may not sound all that interesting but it was a huge hit when it was released. These days, Donkey Kong definitely feels like primitive Mario game, but therein lies the problem. Some of the familiar elements like jumping are there but not refined. You die from falling too far. Levels are quite difficult.
If this was the only Mario game you'd ever played, you probably enjoy it quite a bit. However, in comparison to modern Mario games, it's hard to enjoy this game too much sadly.
Overall, Donkey Kong is a very hard game by today's standards. Nonetheless, it does stand out as a unique and transformative game from the 80's, with a definite place in gaming history.
➙ Must You Play It?
Arcade fans will no doubt find a fun and engaging arcade experience. However, most other gamers may find that death comes too easily and levels are fairly repetitive. Of course this is a classic game in the end, but expect a challenge if you do play it.
