Donkey Kong Country - Game Boy Advance (2003)
25A fine port that highlights a lot of what the GBA just wasn't very good at. For some reason even though the system was capable of more, this just isn't a very fast version of the game. The resolution doesn't really do the original game justice, and as I've mentioned before, this is a pretty big problem for games that rely on better resolution to get their visuals across. The game was made for the SNES and was supposed to push that system, so when you take a few lines away, it loses a lot of what made that version so special. Also the sound. For a lot of SNES ports (see: Final Fantasy VI), the sound gets mangled in the worst ways. While this version isn't as big of a violator, it loses just enough range and sound effects to lose most of the high points from the SNES audio.
It can't be denied that this is still a great game. It's gameplay loses a bit, it's audio loses a bit, and it's graphics lose a bit, but it keeps 80% of what was there in the original. It just doesn't have the wow factor because the original was built to push the SNES to its limit and take every advantage it could get. The result was something special. This version just doesn't have that, but I can't argue that it's still a great GBA platformer. If you needed a version or wanted to DKC to-go, this is a welcome addition. It's just not required reading. All the small additions don't make up for all that was lost.
