I'm up to my old tricks again with another batch of Donkey Kong fangames, bootlegs, and homages. This time I'm joined for a bit by special guest commentator Juliusaurus/Michael Julius Peterson to discuss his old fangame! Games played:

-Donkey Kong World, by Matthew Peterson and Michael Peterson. An unfinished demo for a traditional 2D platformer with DK: King of Swing style graphics. You play as DK in a handful of fun levels plus some secret ones. Some assets were ripped directly from KoS while supplemental sprites were made by Michael and others. Matthew, who later went on to work with Retro Studios on Tropical Freeze(!), did the programming. Michael joined me on voice to give some background and anecdotes about this game.

-Donkey Kong 3 (micro vs system) zx spectrum, by je7ebel. A homebrew demake/port of the multiplayer Game & Watch DK3 to ZX Spectrum, this faithfully recreates the mechanics including a multiplayer mode. I played a few rounds on easy and hard as DK Sr (player 1 by default in this version) and managed to win!

-Super Donkey Kong, by MultiGenre. A twist on DK Arcade, this artillery-style game has you as DK lobbing barrels at a giant Mario as he slowly advances. I never got very far as his attacks are difficult to avoid.

-Kart Fighter, by Hummer Team. An infamous 1994 Famicom bootleg by the creators of Somari and DKC4 (NES), this has the cast of Super Mario Kart in a Street Fighter 2-style fighter. I tried out playing as Junior for a bit but only got past the first fight against Koopa Troopa.

-Dankey Kang 4D Adventure, by Gazden Roolay. A small demo for a DK-themed first person shooter. In a small jungly arena you fire your coconut gun at barrels; discovering King Kut Out transports you to a new, unfinished arena.

-Donkey Kong at the Disco, by KurbenGames. This silly first-person game has you climb a structure while avoiding T-posing Donkey Kong clones until you find the big guy himself at the top.

-Metorito Kong and Metorito Kong 2, by AlexRex30960. A low-rent pair of joke games that use photographs of a gorilla and scenery to make a basic platformer. The first one is single-screen while the sequel adds scrolling. They're kind of funny if frustrating at times due to dodgy hit detection.

-Windswept, by WeatherFell. This in-development game is currently on Kickstarter (please back it!), with a demo for Windows on Steam. I played through the demo's handful of levels until the ultra-hard extra stage. Very much inspired by DKC2, it also takes cues from Celeste for optional difficult parts. It's also adorable, with the duck and tortoise protagonists cute as buttons while exhibiting interesting solo and team-up abilities.
