Explanation
So at the epilogue of Don't Starve Maxwell refers to a greater power in the world of Don't Starve, known only as "Them." So this got me thinking, and I've come up with some ideas.
WARNING: WALL OF TEXT AHEAD!
This is getting into a lot of speculation, but what I believe is that "Them" I made of mysterious individual(s) who control both sides of the "game". Maxwell and Wilson are simply pieces on the metaphorical board.
Don't Starve is a metaphorical Chess game.
"Them" is consisted of one side, the player controlling Wilson, and the other side is a mysterious individual. Maxwell is the "King" piece and the Grue is the "Queen" piece, but he and she are still being controlled by the player of his side, like in chess. The same goes for the things on the other side like WIlson and the characters, and Chester for example.
If this is true, it would make sense, why the last level is called "Checkmate" because you've captured the king, which is the name for when the King in chess has been cornered or captured.
If this is true, it would be sufficiently breaking the fourth wall if Wilson comes to notice he is being controlled by the player of his side, the actual irl player of the game.
This would make for a very interesting setup between the player of the game and whoever is controlling the other side of the "baddies". It would make the game look upon a much more bigger point to the game, and would be pretty cool.
Also, I would imagine the way the game has been going is Wilson would take a position much like Maxwell, and Wilson would try to trick others into coming into his realm, to take his place from the throne. This would also make sense as to be the motivation of Maxwell, as perhaps Maxwell originally was in the same position as Wilson, with an unknown previous ruler of the throne sitting on the nightmare throne, and Maxwell came to take pity on him, just to be trapped, causing a never ending loop of holders of the throne and this "Chess Game".
Again, this is all just speculation, and I'm afraid if I go any deeper Klei will hunt me down lol.
TOASTY
[SPOILERS!]
[Seriously, this spoils almost everything, don't read if you don't want it spoiled]
The Maxwell at the end is the same playable Maxwell.
He remarks upon a number of things that he implies are his doing. He says the harp statue is not his best work, says he imprisoned Wes because he displeased him, etc.
I don't know if you actually go back and KILL Wilson per say, but I've completed adventure mode once and yes Maxell crumbles to dust right in front of you. If you complete adventure mode again your character just takes the place of the last person to complete adventure mode.
There's a theory that the wilderness world is hell or purgatory. All the characters in the character select screen have flames in their background and they all display some form of wickedness that would land them there.
-Wilson is a scientist depicted as performing experiments on helpless animals.
-Willow Burns everything.
-Wendy killed her sister and in general is sadistic and cruel.
-The robot's "empathy module" is "not detected."
-Wickerbottom librarian was probably just overly mean or strict and probably enforced "no fun allowed"
-Maxwell lured many unsuspecting people to this world where they all died, note the skeletons and the ending implying Wilson might do the same.
Wes and wolfgang are the only ones that don't make much immediate sense. Maybe wolfgang was a bully and Wes is there because he's a damn dirty mime and nobody likes mimes.
So if the wilderness is hell and Maxwell ends up there when he dies, it may imply the nightmare throne room is some sort of dark world meta-hell all its own where there is no escape except to be freed, die, and go back to hell by default. I mean, where else would you go, Detroit?
Thanks for watching!
