Inside's ending is by far one of the most confounding conclusions to a game in recent memory, which is why explaining the Inside ending can be quite tough. Independent gaming studio Playdead Games followed up their critically acclaimed 2010 hit, Limbo, with another atmospheric puzzle-platformer called Inside, which hit store shelves in 2016. Inside is another 2.5D puzzle game, and it features an unknown boy as the player character, whose sole job, as in many sidescrollers and puzzlers, is to get to the end.

Of course, getting there can be difficult at times since it requires problem-solving skills with little to no help, aside from spotlights occasionally showing players the direction to head in. Towards the end of Inside, players will find themselves - and the unnamed boy - absorbed into a creature known as the Huddle, which appears to be made up of human limbs and has been experimented on by scientists. Once inside the Huddle, the last 30 minutes or so requires players to escape the containment facility playing as the Huddle.

Considering that the boy broke into a heavily fortified facility and not only knew exactly where to go in order to free the Huddle but also become a part of it - not to mention the fact that mind control was very much a prominent theme and gameplay mechanic throughout the game - it makes sense that the Huddle somehow managed to use the boy (who is the youngest of all the characters in Inside and, therefore, perhaps the most susceptible to this type of mind control) to free itself.

Another theory, which is perhaps the most logical considering Inside's secret ending. (To unlock Inside's secret ending, players must deactivate all the hidden light orbs found throughout Inside's secret rooms.) In the Inside secret ending, players find themselves in another bunker and powers down one of the mind controls helmets by pulling its plug. Then, the boy loses his free will and falls into the same position as the other mindless drones found throughout the game.

This suggests that the boy was being controlled by an external force the entire time, but just not by the blob. Rather, it could've been one of the scientists who was trying to perfect what the Huddle is, thus giving the creature the illusion of an escape in Inside's ending. If this is indeed the case, which gamers may never know because Playdead isn't in the habit of explaining their reasons to the public, then Inside's ending has more in common with sci-fi stories like The Matrix than people realize.
