Shows examples of the three basic movement speeds in original Doom (and most Classic-Doom based games): Walking, Running and Strafe-running. Enable Captions for on-screen notes, and read below for more information on running in Doom.

In each example the player-character is covering the same distance across open terrain, but at progressively faster speeds. Movement types shown and approximate start-to-finish-times:

1) Max Walking speed, ~4.75 seconds
2) Max forward Running speed, ~2.4 seconds
3) Strafe-running speed, ~1.8 seconds

'Strafe-running' is using a simultaneous combination of Run-forward plus Strafe-sideways (in this case, strafing right). This moves the player character at an odd angle, but at a speed that's faster than normal forward-running speed. An even faster version of Strafe-running, not shown here, can be performed with certain input combinations. See https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Straferunning for more information on Strafe-running.

Running speeds are particularly useful for dodging projectiles, 'jumping'/crossing small gaps or pits, and for completing time-critical objectives.

ABOUT 'RUNNING' IN DOOM

In all Classic Doom games, the player character can walk or run. In the original 1990s PC game, the default Run button was the Shift key. (Run and other functions could also be performed with a mouse or joystick.)

Most modern retail Doom games and third-party source ports allow keyboard keys and device buttons to be assigned/re-assigned to different functions. Control settings and configurations can usually be found under an Options sub-menu in the game.

In this video only a keyboard was used.

Following are some default Run (or 'Sprint') controls on various platforms:

PC: Shift key
Xbox/Xbox 360/Xbox One: LT (Left Trigger)
PS3/PS4/PS5: L2 (Left trigger)
Nintendo Switch: ZL trigger
Steam Deck: L2 (Left trigger)
PSX/PS1/PSOne: 'Square' button
Sega Saturn: X button
Nintendo GBA: A button

NOTE: Some modern versions or ports of this game have a separate 'Auto-run' or 'Always run' option. If that feature is already On, then manually activating Run/Sprint at the same time can actually slow you down to walking speed.

0:11 - Max forward Running speed
