Nintendo 64 emulation has been notoriously rough. The most famous emulators of yesteryear never supported some of the basic rendering options of the Nintendo 64 such as its four kinds of dithering. Then for Doom 64, they used to render its text and melt transition effect wrong. In general, many of the options I added to Merciless Edition simply would have no effect on emulators. That is until I discovered Ares!
Ares is a multisystem emulator, so it supports many consoles from all kinds of companies. I was particularly surprised to discover that it could run Doom 64 without any consequential bugs. Even the additional features of Merciless Edition are supported! As a consequence, this emulator is computationally intensive at times so it requires a decent modern computer. Merciless Edition does not seem to recognize memory pak support with Ares, but save states solves that problem until I can update it. Overall this is a great step forward in Nintendo 64 emulation!
