"At Doom's Gate", the music from E1M1 of DOOM, comparison on about eleventy gazillion different sound cards. The DOOM music is MIDI, intended for the Roland SC-55. However, there are *a lot* of different General MIDI-compatible sound cards, modules, soft synths, soundfonts, etc. Since most of them use different patch sets, the music will sound different on each synth, although some MIDI synths use the same or similar patch sets.

This video is inspired by Swampy's chest.'s DOOM music comparison. They made a nice video comparing the E1M1 music on some popular classic sound cards. Here is the link to the video: http://youtu.be/t9IRWOzs0T0

Swampy's chest.'s video is missing some sound card recordings, however. I decided to make an E1M1 comparison video with the missing recordings, plus recordings from some other sound cards.

This video is over 50 minutes long, and compares the MIDI synthesis of several sound cards. Some of these sound cards use very similar patch sets.

The list below is of the sound cards compared, and their ROM/sample set sizes. Some are very cool. And some sound really awful. Which ones are your favorite? Which ones do you love/hate?

Some of the patch sets from these sound cards can be emulated without requiring the sound card, but many can not. Sadly, unless you happen to find old sound cards like these, most of these General MIDI instrument sets cannot be used or heard on newer systems.

There are probably a squillion other sound cards out there which the DOOM music is yet to be recorded on.

I did not record these myself. Instead, they were recorded by others, who have done a great job of collecting and recording music on old sound cards. Many thanks to those who have made all these recordings available. These recordings can be found at this VOGONS thread (copy and paste, then remove the spaces): http :// www . vogons . org/viewtopic . php?f=46&t=26263&sid=0a36c2b4c92c99601f6be239be56b49a

Also, here is a very good German website I found that features reviews and recordings of many sound cards: http :// www . amoretro . de/
