DOOM 3 BFG Edition - using different MIDI instruments
In DOOM 3 BFG Edition, the MIDI music in the classic DOOMs is played using Gravis UltraSound Classic patches. Rather than using the computer's MIDI synth, BFG Edition uses its own TiMidity-based MIDI synthesizer.
It is possible to replace the instruments and gravis.cfg file with different ones, so that the BFG Edition music can sound different. This video shows the 1996 Roland Sound Canvas samples being used to replace the default GUS instruments.
Other sound sets in PAT format can also be used, with the exception of the GUS Pro Patches. The Pro Patches only seem to work correctly in DOSBox and standalone TiMidity; in everything else, including BFG Edition and DOOM source ports, it will have messed up sound such as distorted drums.
Whether the 1996 Sound Canvas instruments sound better than the GUS Classic is kind of a matter of personal preference, although the Sound Canvas samples are similar to an SC-55, and thus sound more "correct" than the Gravis instruments (DOOM's music was written for Roland Sound Canvas).
This is what the BFG Edition music sounds like when it is using the default GUS Classic patches: http://youtu.be/p39arqwDQXw
