reason i was on the main menu before entering the "level" was cause of how this game handles checkpoints
basically, every phase of a given boss counts as a checkpoint, and if you die during a later phase, you can only restart from that phase's checkpoint. not an earlier checkpoint cause apparently that was too hard to code
tons of clutch moments here
on second thought i might not try to do khan maykr and icon of sin deathless the second i get to them because they are a LOT harder than gladiator and considering how badly i was beaten here ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
dozens of fails in the second phase btw

this wasn't the first time i beat this boss (i was using the weapon points and praetor suit points i got after for a little extra boost) but other than that i have on-level gear because i have never gone back to previous levels to get extra stuff in this entire nightmare playthrough
