― Official game description, taken from Bethesda.net [1].
Doom Eternal is a sequel to the 2016 Doom reboot. The game launched a day early on March 19, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. The Nintendo Switch version was delayed and was released on December 8, 2020. The PlayStation 5 version will be released sometime in 2021. The Xbox X/S version was released on the Xbox Gamepass. It was followed up by The Ancient Gods - Part One on October 20th, 2020. A sequel to this, The Ancient Gods - Part Two, was released on March 18th, 2021.

Gameplay
Singleplayer
The single player mode is mostly similar to Doom (2016), but there are a few differences.

The Ultra-Nightmare difficulty level has been removed, with the game now having four difficulty levels, but they skew somewhat tougher than those in Doom (2016). The weapon set is slightly different, with the notable change of the shotgun being the first weapon, and there is no pistol with infinite ammo. To compensate, the chainsaw, which works the same as in Doom (2016) by providing ammo drops from kills, always has at least one fuel. Alternate fire modes returned from DOOM '16 as well and have been rebalanced to make them more viable to switch between. The Doom Slayer is now equipped with a cooldown-style shoulder cannon, which can be used to shoot grenades, ice bombs, or a burst of flame without interrupting attacks. The flame belch stuns enemies and makes them drop armor. The Slayer also has access to a new Blood Punch melee attack.

Doom Eternal has more emphasis on making large jumps and climbs, a bit like a 3-D version of classic Super Mario games. With an increased focus on mobility in the game, the DOOM Slayer gains a grappling hook (via the Super Shotgun), the ability to perform two rechargeable dashes anytime, climb walls, and swing from monkeybars. The Slayer still has his twice-jump boots that he picked up in Doom (2016), has further acquired the ability to scale certain roughly-textured walls like an Imp, and soon gains the ability to dash through the air, which combined with jumping, means Doomguy now can traverse large distances of empty air, contributing to the distinctness of the game from Doom '16. Other objects such as field drones and collectible toys make a reappearance.

There is a new feature called empowered demons, in which demons who have killed a player in another campaign will appear in the player's campaign. These demons are stronger than normal but if killed, give better drops. The Playable Demons feature from the Doom (2016) Multiplayer mode now appears in Eternal's Singleplayer campaign as well, once as a sort of demo.

Extra Lives also return from DOOM '16's Arcade mode for use in the main campaign, though have been modified to respawn the player on the spot with no loss in arena progress as oppose to restarting from a checkpoint a limited number of times.[1] The player has the option of turning on "Extra Life Mode" (together with any difficulty level except Ultra-Nightmare) using these Extra Lives like in a classic video game, with permadeath upon using up the last Life.

Plot
Some time after the events of Doom (2016), Earth has been overrun by demonic forces, wiping out 60% of the planet's population, under the now-corrupted Union Aerospace Corporation. What remains of humanity has either fled Earth or have banded together as part of ARC, a resistance movement formed to stop the invasion but have gone into hiding after suffering heavy losses. The Doom Slayer, having previously been betrayed and teleported away by Dr. Samuel Hayden, returns with a satellite fortress controlled by the AI VEGA, a sort of castle in near-Earth orbit, to quell the demonic invasion by killing the Hell Priests: Deags Nilox, Ranak, and Grav. The priests serve an angelic being known as the Khan Maykr who seeks to sacrifice mankind. The Slayer teleports to a destroyed city in California and kills Deag Nilox, but the Khan Maykr teleports the two remaining priests to unknown locations, forcing the Slayer to continue searching.
