Doom II - Hell to Pay [All Secrets / Wrath of Hell]
The good: Hell to Pay is wildly ambitious, and should be respected for it's consistent visual design, ridiculous commitment to realism, for it's scope. Almost every level has a cool "moment" which makes my jaw drop, whether it's the shuttle sequences, the rockets launching, the fight in outer space, the BIG CRANE or the entire self-destruct level. For a 90's pack, this is straight-up "actual video game" quality, and is a much better wad than Evilution.
The bad: Compared to it's sister wad, the combat is way less refined. There's some truly nasty shit near the end of the campaign. Vile Temple in particular is one of the worst. People praise Romero for being a "troll genious" but this map makes him look tame in comparison, it is by far, bar none, the most uncomfortable map i've ever player. Secret Facility isn't much better. Many maps were obviously not designed with Pistol Starts in mind, therefore i'm using contrinous play.
The ugly: yeah, it's pretty obvious. Hell to Pay looks like dogshit. The new textures aren't good looking at all, and the new monster / weapons designs, (which mind you, i DO appreciate because they help the wad stand out and give it some character of it's own) look out of place.
