One of the halloween specials for this year, although it does contain several maps that are above my skill to complete. I have had a go at a majority of them and I can say that this blew me away in terms of expectations. I looked at it's description being "speedmaps" that involve "ugly/distracting/disorienting" themes, which at first put me off. I also looked at the gameplay, which also put me off as to me it just looked like slaughter, but alas I gave in and I can say that I was wrong about this mapset.
The map starts off with an interesting visual theme it it being a blank canvas, along with your weapons and an arch vile. Of course this room is set on a timer, where you need to ssg the arch vile within 15 seconds. However, this is pretty easily done. You're given plenty of time to recover and get ready for the next phase, which is a tight box and a horde of revenants. Use your rockets wisely, try not to hit the invisible walls and make sure you're ready for the next phase. This unleashes a massive horde of monsters.
I tend to try and push myself through the way with the cyberdemons, and then wall run towards where the BFG is. In the end I gave up trying to grab it past the revenants as they would always block me and kill me. Just go around again and it becomes a lot safer to grab your weapon. The BFG has an infinite ammo script so go wild with it, you'll be spamming the rest of the map.
What hooks me the most about this map is the choice of music, which was taken from goodwad (I believe). It fits the whole theme of eerie yet also transcendent, like you've entered a whole new realm, full of mystery and violence. To me it shows that even the most simple maps can achieve such contrast and setting. Maribo (the creator of this masterpiece) knew exactly what she was doing when making this, and to do it within 30 mins to a few hours is pretty phenomenal!
I might have to continue playing through this wad along with the 50 million I have still running from a month ago!
