To anyone not aware of just what the hell this video demonstrates: SLIGE was a random WAD generator created by David Chess way back in the late '90s, most likely made possible due to the release of the Doom source code. While it did what it advertised, at the same time it was more often than not chucking up hilariously bad levels filled with monotonous texture schemes (rife with misaligned textures at that), boring and unvaried enemy placement and just plain lousy-to-play-around-in areas.

While it did gradually improve (and would sometimes spit out levels *much* better than the pile of shit showcased in this video), it was still generally sub-par compared to the majority of most manually-constructed maps. This didn't stop the very worst mappers from trying to claim SLIGE maps as their own though... even if it was usually very easy to tell which ones these were.

(Incidentally, I once tried my hand at editing a SLIGE map to look completely original and user-built in every way. It remains to be one of the hardest projects I ever attempted - SLIGE maps have a very distinct layout pattern that is almost impossible to blend into the rest of a map without either erasing massive chunks or expanding to the point where you'd be better off starting from scratch.)

I won't lie though; in spite of building spectacular crap-fests, SLIGE was a lot of fun to toy with if you needed a quick fix of making things explode. It was somewhat customisable with the use of command-line parameters, but never really produced anything worth keeping.

Active development of SLIGE was stopped over a decade ago, with the last release in February 2001, although there were various forks of the project floating around for a while which expanded and added numerous features, including one in particular which randomly built the maps as you were playing (although not quite literally during gameplay; it would be during the Intermission screens).

No idea if any of them were any good though, as I never used them!

From what I can tell, all download links are dead though, so sorry if you're expecting to download and use SLIGE to build your own "Shaturday Nite Crap-o-rama". If anyone reading this does have a build of SLIGE (any build!) loitering around though, do tell me, so I can update this description!

Music used:
Resident Evil: Director's Cut (Dual Shock) OST - "Mansion Basement".
Stealth channel plug for user 'StripedLady' for uploading said OST (along with many, many others).
