DOOM II: The Master Levels (UV Playthrough) [PC] - MAP16 - Trapped On Titan
This is generally one of the best maps here, even if it is somewhat over-long for recording. Unlike a certain Evilution map though (yes, I do mean MAP20; one of the crappiest official maps ever) this one remains relatively entertaining throughout, with only one majorly crappy area; the room of pillars.
This square place is just a monotonous bollock-ache to do. It's not hard to survive in the slightest, it's just boring to lower a bunch of platforms one-by-one and splat the resident bastards residing on each.
Once that crappy room's out of the way though, things really pick up for the mid-section of the level. By 1995 standards, it looks good, plays good, and there's a hell of a lot more to it than standing around waiting for platforms to lower. The Yellow Skullkey section in particular stands out for almost being a map in itself. Alright, so it's nowhere near big enough to be a full map, but it's still a cool area.
The one other section that I'm not too fond of is the spiral of rooms to the Blue Skullkey. Again, it's not particularly hard (I just fuck up horribly in this video), but fucking around with a series of platforms like this just slows the gameplay down. Thankfully it's pretty short, and there is a good deal of fighting to be done so it's not explicitly a bad area. I just hate waiting for platforms for the sake of going up a height that's only just taller than the Doomguy. Just use some stairs or something damn it!
The ending's a bit lame with that crusher making easy work of a Cyberdemon, in what would actually be a shitty place to fight one anyway, so either way it's a wasted opportunity and a lazy finish. But it's still not as bad as that poxy pillar room.
