DOOM II: The Master Levels (UV Playthrough) [PC] - MAP20: The Express Elevator To Hell
This is probably my favourite map in the set. It's a tough bastard in one of the best ways possible; clever layouts and well-positioned enemies.
FIrst time through, you may well be wandering around for 30 or so minutes trying to work out how to progress before you finally reach the end; it's a reasonably complex system (for this engine) of finding switches and keys to open sections that contain switches to open other sections, but unlike what you might think when seeing the numbers all over the floor, you don't go directly from 8 all the way to 1.
Because that would be way too simple.
Getting the secret exit is a bitch, and is only reachable with something I hate; Arch-Vile jumps. I know some people like this sort of obscure trickery, but I can't fucking stand it. At least the author has the decency to add an Invulnerability Sphere (even if it is a secret), but the fact that there's no way to access this exit if you kill the Arch-Viles in this small place just pisses me off. Why not have a shootable wall or something in a small place that's not obvious yet can be accessed regardless? Or hell, seeing as you need all three keys to leave this way, why not have a locked switch to open the exit? I don't know, I just hate that AVJ shit.
Whatever. It's still a small negative in a largely enjoyable level. It's fairly small when viewed on the autopmap, but by no means a walk in the park (especially when shit starts teleporting in), so if you're planning to just get out the big gun and splat everything you see then do yourself a favour and quit, because you will die again, and again, and again.
This marks the end of the standard maps; only the secret map remains.
