There is one upgrade which you cannot avoid and that was the one I used for ammo. I seriously doubt certain segments in this run are possible without it to be honest. This one being high up on that list.

Really did wonder if this guy would be possible without any upgrades. As long as you're patient he isn't that bad but shutting down his charge beam is key.

Without upgrades or mods this is extremely difficult to do as it requires a grenade, two rockets and a headhsot from the gauss to do so which is very hard to get consistently which is why I saved my BFG rounds to do it but you got to keep an eye out for the animation.
