1DOOM: The Dark Ages is a 2025 first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, serving as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and the third entry in the modern series after DOOM Eternal (2020). Set in a techno-medieval world, it follows the DOOM Slayer’s rise as humanity’s last hope against Hell’s forces during an ancient war. Developed after The Ancient Gods expansion and entering full production in 2022, it was announced in June 2024 and released on May 15, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, including a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass. Departing from the fast-paced combat of previous entries, The Dark Ages features heavier, more strategic gameplay with enhanced melee options, slow-motion glory kills, and weapons like the Shield Saw and Skull Crusher. It also introduces vehicle combat, including piloting a cyber-dragon and a massive mech, while placing greater focus on narrative and character development to explore the DOOM Slayer’s origins.
