It's rare to find Megawads worth playing nowadays, There's nothing I have against attempting to make something ambitious but most Megawads I've gone over are lacking in either an compelling story or very unusual and misleading mapping, However Echelon was an surprise for me.

This megawad's story talks of the events of Doom 2 but from an different light, Each time an level is complete, An intermission screen recaps what currently happened from each level something most wads, let alone megawads only do after an certain point such as Map 07 and map 11.

Combat is mixed, First few levels have little fighting but it does pick up soon after, New enemies added through an DeHackED piece in Echelon include Worms with flamethrowers and new Floating enemies similar in vein to the Cacodemons, Mapping is good though trying to remember where you are supposed to go at times is hard to remember, Jumping with an Source Port is needed as some locations cannot be accessed without jumping (and those "jumps" across locations with running don't count),

The Megawad is good purely in Vanilla or with any mods such as Brutal Doom or any TC mod but it's one of those that truly shines when you play it the old fashion way...
