Moving directly from Dragon Age: Origins to Dragon Age 2 is a jarring experience and really underlines the rough and rushed state of this much-maligned sequel. The often detailed and atmospheric environments of DA:O are replaced with rudimentary geometric shapes masquerading as mountains and city streets, and even DA2's prologue is filled with the kind of unimaginative trash mobs which populate the rest of the game as well.
That being said, I still count myself among the Dragon Age 2 apologists. The unusual and at least partially unpredictable narrative structure still feels like a breath of fresh air compared with the generic orc invasion of Origins, and at its best the combat system is both fun and tense. Plotwise I hadn't fully appreciated before just how strong the whole refugee theme is in the opening hours, and there's a real-world political resonance here which surely wasn't a coincidence...
