Dragon Ball Z (Japanese: ドラゴンボールゼット Hepburn: Doragon Bōru Zetto, usually shortened to DBZ) is a Japanese animated television series produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball Z is the sequel to the Dragon Ball anime and adapts the last 325 chapters of the original 519 chapter Dragon Ball manga series created by Akira Toriyama that was published from 1988 to 1995 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Dragon Ball Z first aired in Japan on Fuji TV from April 25, 1989 to January 31, 1996 before being dubbed in several countries around the world including the United States, Australia, Europe, India and Latin America.

Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of protagonist Goku, who together with his friends protects the earth from wandering enemies using intergalactic fighter planes, super-powered androids and indestructible magical creatures. Like the original Dragon Ball anime that followed Goku from childhood to adulthood, Dragon Ball Z is a continuation of his adulthood, but at the same time parallels the development of his children, Gohan and Goten as well as the evolution from rivals Piccolo and Vegeta from enemies to allies.

Due to the success of the anime in America, chapters of the manga were also released by Viz Media under the title Dragon Ball Z. Additional works called animanga have also been released which adapted the animation to manga form. The popularity of Dragon Ball Z has resulted in many releases appearing to represent the plurality of content within the Dragon Ball universe; includes 14 films and 148 video games (most of which were released only in Japan) and numerous soundtracks. Dragon Ball Z remains a cultural icon through its many adaptations, including its more recent remake series titled Dragon Ball Kai.

Budokai 3 is a fighting game with cel-shaded graphics to mirror the look and feel of the combat in the series. Where Dragon Ball Z: Budokai included characters all the way to the Android Saga and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 introduced characters from the Buu Saga, Budokai 3 now has characters from the DBZ films, Dragon Ball GT, and even the original Dragon Ball.
