Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line
Playthrough | Part 1: New Heroes Shall Rise
It's been a while since I have done the Dragon Quest games. Well, not really. I did a 4-part playthrough of the first game. So may as well add another to my repertoire. This is Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line.
Dragon Quest II was released for the Nintendo Famicom on January 26, 1987. A mere seven months after the release of the original. That's a bad sign. The West wouldn't get this game until October 30, 1990 as Dragon Warrior II. Unlike the previous game, Enix published it via their US subsidiary. Because the first Dragon Quest game failed in the West, Enix lost Nintendo of America's support. Basically they were on their own and that served as the impetus for Enix's eventual departure from the West a few years later.
Anyway, in terms of plot, the game takes place 100 years after the events of the first game. Surprisingly, it's also set centuries before the events of Dragon Quest VII. The game focuses on three protagonists who are all descendants of the hero Alef. Alef went with the Princess and formed their own kingdom. They also got married and had kids who in turn also had children. The kingdom of Moonbrooke was invaded by Hargon. He wants to bring the demon Malroth to destroy the world. Only one survived the assault, a soldier who fled to Midenhall. He informs the king before he passes. The king in turn, commands his son, the Midenhall Prince, Allen to defeat Hargon.
But the Prince isn't alone as he's joined by two of his cousins who are also descendants of Erdrick and Alef. The first is the Prince of Cannock. The other is the Princess of Moonbrooke. These two can be named whatever which I find to be the most upsetting. That's not the least of my concern with this game.
My concern is that this game is without a doubt one of the hardest JRPGs ever. Many people stated that this game is one of the most difficult and one of the most unforgiving. It didn't stop the game from selling 2.4 million copies upon it's release.
Either way, Part 1 focuses on the Prince Allen grinding a bit and then encountering the Prince of Cannock who joins the party. Part 2 is where we find the Princess and hopefully find a means to free her of a situation she's in.
