Dragon Quest - Part 2/2 - SFC (SNES) - ドラゴンクエスト ~ Dracolord
Good ol' Dragon Quest 1! This remake for the Super Famicom is easier than the NES original, thankfully. The first game in the franchise is quite short and quite simple, and you only have a single party member for the entire game. Many of DQ's mascots make their first appearance here, including, of course, the cute little blue slime! Also notable is that puff puff was here right from the start, as well as a girl you can take to the local inn, to which the next morning the innkeeper will say, "You had fun last night, didn't you?". The Japanese is more explicit than the English localization, which says something like, "You stayed up late last night".
Otherwise, here are a few bits of trivia mentioned in the playthrough that I will reiterate here.
- The MSX/MSX2 ports of the game (popular computers of the 80s in Japan) are nearly identical to the NES original, but the MSX version has fewer colors. The MSX2 version is closer to the original. Those ports retain their brutal difficulty.
- The Super Famicom remake (the one I'm playing here), alongside Dragon Quest II included on the same cartridge, is considerably easier than the original. Dragon Quest V had just come out the year prior, so this remake uses the DQV engine. Many revisions were made for ease of play, including adjusting the strength of the enemies, as well as giving the player more EXP and more gold after every battle. Banks to deposit money and items were also added in this remake, which did not exist in the original. Obviously, the graphics are completely overhauled and some dungeons were redesigned.
- The SFC version was also ported to the Satellaview, a JP-exclusive satellite peripheral for the SFC, which is nearly identical to its source material, though with some added events.
- The Game Boy Color ports of the game were based on the SFC version. Obviously, the graphics were simplified and the view shrunk. However, a cinematic intro was added to the first game. They also added exclusive borders that you can only see if you play the game on a Super Game Boy. I showcase those at the end of part 2 of the playthrough. It might also have been made even easier than the SFC version, I'm not sure.
- The Famicom (NES) originals AND the SFC remakes were all ported to a single disc on the Wii in 2011, but remained a JP-exclusive.
- The game was also ported to mobile phones, but let's ignore that. The Nintendo Switch version is based on the mobile version and therefore looks awful and is made even easier still!
DQI is fun. Simple and short, but fun.
