Dragon Quest II is the hardest game in the franchise! Although this SFC remake is considerably easier than the original, it's still a very tough game. You wouldn't know it if you only played the crappy mobile Nintendo Switch version, though. DQII introduces party members! They have no canonical names, they are just known as the Prince of Lauresia (Midenhall in English), the Prince of Sumaltria (Cannock in English) and the Princess of Moonburg (Moonbrooke in English). The latter two get random names depending on which name you gave the Prince of Lauresia at the beginning of the game. This second game is also considerably bigger than the first, with a bigger world map and a longer story, the entirety of the first game's map being a tiny part of this game, albeit reduced in size. Since the game takes place 100 years after the events of the first game, and since we are still descendants of Roto, it's fun to go back to Alefgard and hear the music from the first game again. Speaking of music, there are some nice tunes here too, but again, the battle music will not go down in history for me.

Here's some more trivia,
- The MSX/MSX2 ports of the NES original had rearranged music. And of course, fewer colors. They are otherwise practically identical to the NES original, except for one notable thing. The scandalous swimsuit (あぶない水着) appears here for the first time, and ONLY in the MSX version! It wasn't in the NES original, it isn't in the SFC or GBC remakes or any other version of the game!
- The SFC remake was included with the first DQ on the same cartridge, but was made considerably easier. And thank goodness, because even the SFC version is tough as nails! (Watch the playthrough. XD) It's once again based on the DQV engine, and of course has battery backed saves. They also added the opening with the destruction of the Castle of Moonburg in this version. Another notable change is that if you sleep at the inn in Bellaneur, the Prince of Sumaltria will get sick and will only be able to be cured by a World Tree Leaf. Considering how hard the game already is, you really don't want to have only two characters in your party, so I avoided sleeping there in this playthrough.
- The Game Boy Color version is based off the SFC remake. Some NPCs are placed in different areas, as for some reason a bunch of houses in towns in the GBC version have had second floors accessible through stairs added to them. I also think the game was made a little easier, again. If you play this version on a Super Game Boy, you get exclusive borders, just like for the first game, which I showcase at the end of part 6 of the playthrough.
- This SFC version also saw a release on the Wii in 2011, just as DQ and DQIII.
- Dragon Quest gets its first subtitle in this second entry, which was removed from the original English NES translation. "Akuryou no Kamigami" translates to, "The Evil Spirit Gods". Its official modern subtitle, however, is now "Luminaries of the Legendary Line".

Dragon Quest II is brutal. But it was a necessary step in the franchise's history to move on to greater heights!
