Dragon Quest
Playthrough | Part 1: A Hero's Journey Begins
This game needs no introduction. No way. No how. Anyone that is a fan of JRPGs should know what this game is all about. Before Final Fantasy would make an impact throughout the world, there is this game. This was the game that would start it all and would leave a lasting impact that remains to this day. Welcome to Dragon Quest.
Dragon Quest was released on May 27, 1986 for the Nintendo Famicom. It went on to become a huge success, selling 1.5 million copies. It would also start a franchise for it's company ENIX. It had a small team consisting of the following. First is Yuji Horii, a former writer of Shonen Jump who got into game development thanks to a contest done by ENIX. Next is Koichi Nakamura, game designer and founder of Chunsoft. Third is Akira Toriyama, manga artist responsible for hits such as Dr. Slump & his most popular work, Dragon Ball. Last is Koichi Sugiyama. He would be responsible for the game's music. Though we all know what kind of person Sugiyama really is. I won't be mentioning it for the sake of things.
With these four at the helm, they would go on to develop a game that would revolutionize the console-style JRPG. To this day, Dragon Quest is a franchise that is well beloved in Japan. But the same can't be said for the rest of the world. The game would be released for the NES in 1989 under the title Dragon Warrior. The game was NOT a success there. Made worse was that Nintendo pretty much gave away copies of it with every new subscription of Nintendo Power. All it did was cause Enix to lose the support of Nintendo's US branch and so Enix would take it upon themselves to bring the other games over. I'll explain about those later.
So yeah, the game begins like this. You assign a name for your character and then you are dropped into the world of Alefgard. If you are wondering, the hero's name is Alef. You actually start off in the kingdom of Tantegel. You're assigned by the king to save the world from the Dragonlord who has stolen the Ball of Light and has summoned a horde of monsters to roam the lands. In addition, you have to rescue the Princess, Gwaelin who was kidnapped by the Dragonlord. Not an easy thing eh? Well get used to this.
Dragon Quest is, in and of itself, a turn-based RPG. You travel in an overworld, battling monsters and trying to survive. Since this is the first game, you only control one party member. You need to win battles to get experience. Earn enough experience, you level up and leveling up will boost your stats. You are going to need it if you want to survive a game like this. This game is the first that would give birth to a genre that is still going to this day.
See you in Part 2 because there's a lot that we need to do.
