Before Alex sets out for the Fire Cavern to obtain the Fire Ring, he first does a few side quests to ensure he's in good fighting condition before taking on that treacherous place.

One important side quest he has to do is obtain the Serpent Scales needed to tame the large flames that block certain paths in the Fire Cavern. Find Rodister, a former pupil of Master Qunos, living in the Lake Cave, who will tell you to return to Qunos to get the scales (you must speak to Rodister to trigger the event noise). Return to Rysis, Speak to Qunos and get 20 Serpent Scales. Nice.

Return to Casdra, and journey to the Fire Cavern.

This place can be dangerous, so be on your guard against many fire type enemies. The place also has many twists and turns, so be mindful of the rooms you visit, so that you don't lose your bearings in this place.

At the end of the Fire Cavern, is another boss fight; The Fire Dijinn. Try and sidestep his attacks (especially his charge attack) and just use you sword attacks against him. With him defeated, go to the next room to obtain the key item: Fire Ring. Return to the town of Casdra, heal up/save, restock on supplies and prepare for the next area:
