This is my modern remake of the original Dune VIDEO GAME soundtrack by Cryo Interactive (i.e. this is not a remake of the Dune: The Spice Opera soundtrack).
Cryo Interactive's 1992 offering of Dune is a hidden gem. Blending adventure with economy management, and real-time strategy, this hybrid game was pretty groundbreaking for its time. The entire game takes place in real time, which you'll find is your greatest asset. As Paul Atreides you manage the oversight of operations on the planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. You must use everything in your arsenal to face the Harkonnen threat.
You must strike a balance between mining spice for the Emperor, and with building your military might for battling the Harkonnen. Fail to do either and you will lose. To win the game, you must carefully manage your spice mining operations while gathering the troops you need to drive the Harkonnen from the planet.
This game was made for the following platforms: Windows (MS-DOS), Commodore Amiga, and Sega CD.
Dune also had a video game historical impact in that it was one of the first floppy disk titles to be ported to CD-ROM, which allowed it to use audio samples and excerpts from the David Lynch film in travel animations. Virgin Interactive also developed what would become the standard in PC game boxes for quite some time. By using a cheaper insert box covered by a printed sleeve, they were able to lower the costs of production. A CD version of the soundtrack was also released entitled 'Dune: Spice Opera', composed by Stéphane Picq and Philippe Ulrich.
While commercially successful, the "sequel" to this game would go to Westwood Studios (an absolute masterpiece in its own right), still published by Virgin Interactive. Cryo would take another crack at Dune in 2001's 'Frank Herbert's Dune', the failure of which bankrupted the company before it could release 'Dune Generations'.
Original score by Stéphane Picq (1992)
