DUNE: Keep the Secret (Longplay) - Level 1 of 5
Here's the complete walkthrough of the DUNE: Keep the Secret game. It's not the rarest game in history, but I can say that it isn't very well known. First of all -- it's not Frank Herbert's DUNE. In this case DUNE is a German rave duo that was popular back in the nineties, and Keep the Secret is one of their biggest hits. The game was a part of HISTORY album that was released in 2000 (this game doesn't look like it's from 2000, but it's more like a free bonus to the compilation album, so, let's not complain much) and wasn't ever released as a separate product. So, the only way to get it is to buy the album. Remember Iron Maiden's Ed Hunter? Same stuff, but in a different genre.
DUNE: Keep the Secret is a classical puzzle-oriented first-person adventure game where you play the role of a nameless pilot who crashed in the desert and found a mysterious pyramid. Now he needs to collect four scarabs to free the Egyptian princess and escape the desert.
The game is divided into five levels. The goal of the first four is to make your way through the labyrinths and find puzzles to solve. One puzzle = one scarab. In the final level, all you need to do is place scarabs on the altar. Also, you can make your own score by exploring the pyramid and finding the artifacts. There are two artifacts on each of the first four levels and no artifacts at all on level five. In this walkthrough, I'll show you how to find all the artifacts, how to travel through the labyrinths, and how to solve all the puzzles in the game. I won't go for the ideal score though, since in that case I'd need to travel through all the sections of the pyramid even if they're useless, and walkthrough would look very frustrating this way. So, no useless rooms, but with all the interesting stuff included. AFAIK there's no extra ending for the best score possible, so, I did these videos the way they can be used as a walkthrough.
Technical note: This game is based on QuickTime technology and requires an old version of QuickTime software. AFAIK there's no way to make it work on modern versions of Microsoft Windows. Remember AMBER: Journeys Beyond? It's the same thing. The easiest way to make it work is to use Microsoft Virtual PC (free software from Microsoft) with Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 installed. You can also use VMWare, but it isn't free and will cost you money. Since Virtual PC is enough to run this game, I recommend you to use it. This video was recorded with Virtual PC and Windows 98, so, my PC (which isn't high end) was trying to emulate old Windows AND record the video, so, sorry if the game works somehow slow for me.
Unlike Ed Hunter, this game is NOT using CDDA music. The only piece of DUNE's music in this game is a little fragment of Keep the Secret song in the second puzzle and in the final movie. Everything else is just that... THING in the background. You can listen to the songs on a disc while playing the game, but it'll slow it, because there's no installation (you can save your games on the hard drive though) and the whole game works from a CD. So, no DUNE's songs here and it's not my fault.
Level #1: I'll walk through the labyrinths of the first level of the pyramid and solve the first puzzle to get the first scarab (the path may be blocked by various traps, so, player is supposed to find levers to deactivate them). The puzzle is very easy to solve, it's a simple jigsaw puzzle. Start with the bottom row of pieces since they're easiest pieces to combine and then make your way to the top. After you solve the puzzle and get the first scarab, you need to find steps upward to enter level 2. Actually, you can enter level 2 in two different places. I'll show you only one, but honestly, there's no difference; different steps only mean one thing -- you'll enter level 2 in a different place. Also, this level contains two artifacts to collect. There's no need to collect them if you just want to beat the game, the only reason to search for them is to get higher scores. I'll show you where to find both of them though. Enjoy.
