Dungeon Breaker - 04 - Exploring the New Hub
1Previously, in Dungeon Breaker:
Aspiring monster tamer Alec and his childhood friend Tina are tasked with investigating a monster-infested cave near their village after monsters rob a traveling merchant. Alec hopes to prove himself so he can travel to the capital to seek monster tamer advice from and attempt to woo Tina's older sister Karen. In the cave, Alec forms a pact with Caracal, a catgirl monster, to make progress. They then encounter and fight off human bandits, and rescue Rill, a young woman being held captive.
Deep in the cave, the party finds Gale, an arrogant young man, berating his timid younger sister Sorsha. They're monster tamers from what used to be a noble family, and were sent here by a duke to search for something, but Gale would rather use the monsters to steal in hopes of buying his way back into the nobility. They flee after losing a fight. Though not a satisfying conclusion, at least the village should be safe now. Alec receives permission to travel to the capital with Tina.
Rill pays him a visit overnight, saying something about wanting to thank him and to get herself used to being with a man again. (I'm making sort of a running gag of claiming they play tabletop games in these scenes, but I think we all know better.) She stays in the village when Alec and Tina set off the next day.
Upon reaching the capital, Alec promptly makes a fool of himself, gawking at everything and getting in an argument with Karen's patron, the princess Celsia Um Raintis. Fortunately, she's not big on formality, and even seems to appreciate his artlessness, much as she acts offended. She agrees to put Alec and Tina up as guests in her mansion while they visit.
Alec asks Karen about his troubles learning skills from monsters, but she doesn't have much to say, beyond some vague suggestions about being fully open with his monsters and not letting anything get between them. Neither he nor Tina have any idea what she means by that.
