Dungeon Breaker - 02 - Cats Fit Where They Will

Alec subdues and uses his monster tamer skills to form a pact with a Caracal, a catgirl monster, in the woods, but sets her free soon after when he fails to draw any skills from her. He's evidently tried this many times before and never gotten it to work, even though drawing skills from monsters of the other sex is supposed to be the key skill of monster tamers. His childhood friend Tina arrives to check up on him, and encourages him to change tracks and become a fistfighter like her, but he's determined to stick with monster taming, like Tina's older sister Karen.
The village elder then calls for them, and although Tina's initial assumption is that Alec must have gotten himself into trouble again, it turns out that a merchant was attacked by monsters on the way to the village and had his goods stolen. The goods are assumed a lost cause, but the elder is concerned that the monsters might attack the village, so sends Alec and Tina to investigate. Alec pounces on the opportunity to prove himself, hoping that his parents will then let him travel to the capital to get advice on monster taming from Karen, who works there. Though Tina is frustrated that he's too fixated on her sister to notice her, she agrees to help, if only to keep him out of trouble.
Alec and Tina soon arrive at the entrance to the nearby Kahna Cave, where monsters have settled in. They used to play around here when they were younger, and he recalls Karen being kind of a coward who he had to drag along. Tina doesn't remember her sister ever being anything but reliable, though. Regardless, Tina expresses some discomfort with dark, confined spaces, but Alec plunges right into the cave, and the adventure begins!
