The dungeon master wants capture his player's adventuring party, but make it seem like it could of happened some other way. This isn't the best of ideas for an adventure or encounter in my opinion. There are things that can go wrong during the encounter messing up the whole plan. It's far better to just tell your gaming group you wake up in shackles, a jail cell, or whatever. It's far better to just take away player choice than to try to trick them into thinking they have it.
