Durak, meaning "fool" in Russian, is a well-known card game originating from Russia. It uses a 36-card deck, omitting the 2 through 5 cards from a standard 52-card deck. The objective is to avoid being the last player with cards in hand, as this player is called the "Durak." The game accommodates 2 to 6 players.
Each player starts with six cards. The next card from the deck is placed face up to determine the trump suit, and the remaining deck is placed crosswise on top of this trump card. The player with the lowest trump card begins as the attacker, and the player to their left becomes the defender.
The attacker attempts to play cards against the defender, who must counter with a higher card of the same suit or a trump card. If the defender successfully counters all attacking cards, the cards are discarded, and the next player becomes the attacker. If the defender cannot counter, they must pick up all the cards on the table, and the next player becomes the attacker.
Players can join the attack by adding cards of the same rank as those in play, provided the total number of attacking cards does not exceed six or the number of cards in the defender's hand if it is less than six.
After each turn, players draw cards from the deck to maintain a hand of six cards until the deck is depleted. The attacker draws first, followed by the defender, then the other players in clockwise order. Once the deck is exhausted, players continue without drawing new cards.
The game continues until one player is left with cards in their hand after all others have discarded theirs, and this player is labeled the Durak. The game can be played in multiple rounds, with the loser of one round often starting as the first attacker in the next. In some variations, the game ends as soon as one player is left with cards, while in others, the Durak may face penalties or specific tasks.
Durak is celebrated for its simplicity and strategic depth, requiring players to carefully choose when to play their cards and trump cards. There are several variations of the game, including "Throw-in Durak," "Passing Durak," and "Perevodnoy Durak," each introducing different rules and strategies that add complexity and new layers of interaction among players.
