Dwarf Fortress Part 21 and Channel Discussion
Playing some more Dwarf Fortress and talking a bit about my channel.
It's the winter of year 5, and this is a mostly typical episode, we have some goblins attack and a dwarf has a strange mood. The discussions with the fortress liaison from last episode complete, and our Baron becomes a Duke as our lands are upgraded to a duchy. We also are attacked by a two headed giant, but he doesn't cause much trouble.
As for this channel, I want to make the videos more interesting and better quality, but I also want to show exactly what I'm doing and not edit out any of the steps along the way. This is a hobby for me, but I also want it to be a bit of a tutorial for people who aren't familiar with these games, games I like and want to show off so others will like them. I'd like to make as high quality videos as I can, but I'm also not able to dedicate more than a few hours a week to making videos, and I'm only using free software (besides the initial purchase of video capture software) for video editing, but I'm learning how to use the tools that I have better all the time.
A lot of people are familiar with Minecraft, which is why I don't really do a 'let's play' style with Minecraft, but more of 'here are complex and interesting and useful things that you can build'. Not as many people are familiar with Kerbal Space Program (but that's changing) or Dwarf Fortress, so with these games, I try to play them as half lets play and half tutorial. This is so i can teak people the game while showing off what's so cool about it.
I've played Dwarf Fortress from it's first released version in 2006, when it was only a single z-level,. It's come a long way, and is still getting features added, although not as quickly as some would like, but the game is solid and fun, and will remain interesting for years, but it is very complex for new players and the interface isn't the best.
There are newer games coming out that takes some of Dwarf Fortresses design concepts, but have a nicer interface and maybe easier, or at least less complex game play. I'm hoping to show off some of them on this channel over the next few weeks and months, along with my normal content.
So, I'm not totally going change the channel, but I'm going to try to be more entertaining and not have as many dull, quiet parts in my videos. Now a Dwarf Fortress season isn't really the best example of this, but in this video I do fill the duller part of game play with discussion about the channel, instead of silence or background music. I'm going to attempt to have discussion in my other videos, or maybe add some time-lapse to reduce dull sections such as long burns in KSP.
If you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to leave a comment or send me a message. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy my videos!
