Turns out it is most likely a goner (broken spider), and Mom needs a new washing machine.
The machine did last well over a decade with considerable abuse, so my parents got their money's worth out of it.

On the plus side my own Maytag is still running strong, only having the occasional firmware error where the end of cycle beep keeps getting disabled.
