Dynamic Game Music with NATIVE INSTRUMENTS Picked Acoustics
Some Thoughts on Game Music again:
The Melody: In 9 of 10 situations this melody would be way to dominant & overwhelming. In general you want to make sure that the melody is connected to something (a character, a place, an idea, a feeling), and re-use it at very well planned situations. Most of the times you'll probably only tease a specific phrase (leitmotif) of this melody, to avoid a musically overload, while still triggering the high potential of memorability if you combine specific phrases with visuals. The human brain is amazing in connecting things and - more important - realising if things change a little bit. If you make the player listen to a specific phrase a lot of times, in specific situations (easiest example: if something important happens to the protagonist), the phrase will be connected / saved. If you always used the same instrument, this information will be saved, too - subconsciously. Now the player will remember the connection, even if the visuals aren't on-screen, too (the melody alone will trigger thoughts regarding the protagonist, if we stick to the example i mentioned) That's the point where you can begin to utilise that even more - if you change only one note of the melody's phrase, for example by pushing it from major to minor, or the other way around, the player will notice that. And: the effects of music theory apply on everybody, even if you have literally never ehard about music theory. It's a rule like: hot water will always feel pretty hot. And that's awesome, since we can utilise that for any game.
