Note: This playthrough uses a relatively recently discovered patch, which disables the auto lock-on system that normally locks the player onto the first enemy they hit with a normal attack, making it impossible to turn afterwards. (see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHUzuyzu1k4)

Normal attacks are pretty much all Guan Yu needs. His Musou is airborne, but still solid, with nice range.
HIs C2, C5 and C6 are unusable against officers, as the attacks are too slow, so any officer can always guard them if they decide to. You can tell because the combo counter resets even if the attack hits. These attack are only for style points and nothing else.

Guan Yu's main problem is that he has one of the lowest Bow Defense stats, and his unique weapon makes it even worse with Defense +59 (which raises enemy Bow Attack due to how the scaling works) but no Bow Defense anywhere.
The rest of the weapon is solid, with Attack, Musou Charge, Life, and a Lightning Element on the follow-up to C5. The Lightning isn't of much use but the rest is nice. Just watch out for archers.


For YTR, the main thing is that you can get 8-hit combos with either C3→C2→Normal Attacks, or you can also do Three Normal Attacks into Musou.
I tried to get 16-hits with True Musou but it comes up one hit short. You can juggle with the jumping attack for 16-hits, although it's not the simplest thing.

Hu Lao shows how primitive Lü Bu's AI actually is in this game and it relies purely on brute strength and the super armor. With a well-timed jump, you can jump right over Lü Bu's C1 without being hit and then continue guarding. Even without an Elixir there isn't that much risk waiting for Musou to recharge at low health.

Guan Yu's Escape is unique to only Guan Yu, with the objective being to escort the carriage along the five gates. In this game, damage to the carriage happens automatically when you're too far away from it.
The unique weapon is here, being impossible to miss as the only requirement is passing the fourth gate, and the supply team spawns ahead of it and travels south, i.e. towards your position.
Xiahou Dun here drops a rare item, The Way of Musou. I wait and defeat him before the fourth gate, as it's a good spot to have a 1v1 fight without soldiers around.
Since you have to defeat him, it makes the Way of Musou an unmissable rare item, although you do have to specifically do Guan Yu's Story Mode for it.
In Free Mode, Guan Yu has an extra line about his horse if you aren't playing as him.

Guan Yu's Chang Ban is late enough that all the drops are doubled, leading to hilarious amounts of possible stats - Attack +8 from each of the first four officers, which makes the rest of the stage look like Easy difficulty. (reminder maxing the Attack bar on the character select screen should take around +100 Attack)
At the end you can see the peasant groups freeze up in a queue around the western bridge, which completely halts the retreat, so the only option there is to defeat Cao Cao.

Guan Yu actually gets not one but two stages unique to himself, second being Fan Castle.
Pang De has hyper mode, and there's a cutscene with Xu Huang if you go fight him directly. You can also just wait for the flood to avoid fighting them, but you miss out on their drops that way.
After the flood, Wu reinforcements appear. Guan Yu is the commander so they can't really do much here.
Interestingly Sun Ce appears here (replacing Gan Ning), under Lü Meng, even though he is technically supposed to be the Wu leader now. After clearing Sun Jian's Story Mode, this would be the only place where Sun Ce appears as an enemy.
There's only one gate, in Sima Yi's camp, and it pretty much seems infinite. If you want a clear map quickly it's much simpler to go there and close it first. No problem to get 1000 KOs in this stage if you so desire.

Yi Ling happens despite Guan Yu being alive, because it's still the only Shu vs Wu stage, so it kind of has to happen. It's the same stage as always though.

At Wu Zhang Plains I finally remember to get the rare item, which completes the collection of rare items.
I on purpose trigger reinforcements near Zhang Fei and ignore the southwest, as I need officers on my side to be defeated for the item to spawn.

Fun Fact: the cutscene of Guan Yu taunting Sima Yi is actually one guy talking to himself, as both characters are voiced by the same person.
