Well, I guess I jumped the gun calling the previous battle Sishui Gate. This one has us actually fight Hua Xiong. And take it. And indeed, that’s the objective here. You can finish this stage pretty easily just by rushing the enemy,

This is also the first stage where we get full control of a party. We get Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei to add to our party. These guys are around the most after Zhao Yun and Lei Bin. Fortunately, they’re all pretty solid characters. Except Zhang Fei. Zhang Fei kind of sucks.

You see, Zhang Fei has too many AoE attacks. That is to say, ALL of his attacks are AoE. That’s not uncommon in this game, but he has the biggest ones. To keep the cost on them low, they have incredibly small attack power as well, making it where he’s guaranteed to not only fall behind Guan Yu, but even Liu Bei in damage output. He can only out perform them if there’s groups of enemies, which will only ever be peons, which are pretty much never actually a threat. His first attack is the weakest attack in the game due to it hitting 8 squares, costing 1 AP, and having a status effect.

Status effects are also mostly useless in this game. Like, they do have an effect, but you will almost never notice them and elemental effects are so uncommon I don’t even know what most of them do, and I’ve beaten this game three times now. It’s never worth it to inflict a status effect as opposed to just outright attack the enemy, so why bother? The best benefit I could find is to use a move that can inflict Stun if an enemy is guarding and you have no choice but to attack from the front. But that situation is so rare, I never once actually did it myself and have only had enemy archers do it to me.

Guan Yu has AoE attacks as well, but they take up less squares and vertical ones tend to deal more damage, which is which he has. He also has a buff he can apply to himself at any time, but just as with status debuffs, I never really found these worth doing and only do it when there’s no other action he can perform and guarding wouldn’t be beneficial.

Liu Bei is, weirdly, probably the best of the brothers. He has a strong single target attacks, which are fantastic for shredding officers, and he has vertical attacks to give him a bit more range. Single target attacks generally make a character really good in this because you can rely on them to take down an officer when they need to. Groups can easily be dealt with with a musou, which are ALWAYS AoE attacks, so even if a character has very small range they can handle groups easily. Officers are the real threat in this game anyways.
