Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair is a next-generation update of Earth Defense Force 2025 released in North America on October 23, 2015 for consoles and July 18, 2016 on Steam. 4.1 comes with improvements made to make the EDF appear to be actually at war - for instance, multiple tanks appear throughout the earlier stages, including the first level, which had not appeared there in 2025. There will be 89 missions in total with the main story and 98 online missions, and new enemies such as what appears to be an updated Vallak Dino Mech known as the Erginus as well as the huge mech Walking Fortress Balam built specifically to fight them will be appearing.
