1. Moody, Interrogation Room Top Down
So for this look I want a moody, dramatic interrogation type look. And for that I’m getting inspiration for the classic movies where there’s one light above the cop and the criminal.

The light i'm going to use is the China Ball. This is a really cheap and good quality lighting setup that I got from IKEA. It’s basically a lamp inside this white dome that evenly spreads the light softly.

All you have to do is place your light in the center of the characters and raise it above them. Now this is where your preference comes in. You can take off the white dome to get a harsher light/shadow to be even more dramatic.

Now because the china ball spreads the light all around the set, you can use blag flags to skirt the light to just light the scene below.

2. Side light
This lighting is a popular lighting technique called Rembrandt Lighting. It’s a nice side light to the subject that gives it some contrast to the face. I like the fall off of the light where the shadows aren’t so harsh.

If your light is still too dramatic you can add a bounce card to the right side of the face to fill in the shadows a bit. A lot of YT videos are shot this way.

3. Ring Light
Now this is for you YouTubers. We found that this Ring Light are really great for beauty and really anyone that talks directly to the camera. Why? The shape of the light focuses on the face, the light is soft enough to make a beautiful soft look on your face and the circular shape is reflected in your eyes to make them POP!

So that’s it. There’s actually many more ways you can use 1 light so i’d love to know how you do it. Let me know in the comments section.
