Here's an easy way to beat the garden snail early in the game without taking damage. The easiest way is to use a bow with the ambush passive mutation. Wait for it's head to get out of the shell, aim for the eyes when crouched and there you go, you 1 shot it with the very first bow. For melee I suggest using the hammer instead of the lance.
