Elden Ring | 60 Second Review
10Elden Ring is a behemoth. It's huge. It's monstrous. And it will eat you up and spit you out if you're not careful. FromSoftware is back with its biggest game yet and its first attempt at an open world, alongside Game of Thrones novelist George R. R. Martin joining as a collaborator.
Elden Ring is an action role-playing game that takes place in The Lands Between, a huge open world split into six main areas that house linear dungeons. As a Tarnished, you are recalled to the world after the Elden Ring is shattered, to vanquish the demigod offspring of Queen Marika the Eternal, piece together the fragments and become the Elden Lord.
The game continues to prune and perfect the same methodical combat that all Souls games have utilised for over a decade now. This has the player taking on challenging enemies until they are defeated, earning Runes to level up and repeat. If the player dies, they lose all the Runes they were holding and must retrieve them before dying again.
While scary at first, the engaging combat is hugely addictive. Couple this with its fascinating mythology and dynamite orchestral soundtrack and it all goes a long way to overshadow an aggressive open world that punishes exploration from the beaten path. Newcomers might be put off by both the amount of jargon and steep difficulty curve, however, those that commit to Elden Ring will find a more than satisfying experience.
