2The Lands Between, the world of Elden Ring, is inhabited by gods, monsters, and mortals. The Elden Ring, the embodiment of the world's fundamental laws, was shattered, and its fragments, known as Great Runes, are now held by various Demigods — offspring of powerful deities. These Shardbearers vie for control of the Ring, battling to reunite the pieces and claim its power, forming the game's main story Bosses.
The Demigods have been twisted by the power of their fragments, warping their bodies and minds as they succumb to the Ring's corrupting influence. Those touched by the Elden Ring often bear a golden aura, reflected in the glow of their eyes. According to Hidetaka Miyazaki, the design philosophy of these major bosses was "...to depict these beings as not just creatures and horrible monsters but have an element of heroism and an element of mythology to them."
