So there is currently no code name. Regarding the delays of elementary OS 6, version 7 should be faster in connection with the release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Elementary OS 7 is planned to be released in the first half of 2022.
GTK4 port is under construction
A GTK4 port is currently under construction. Progress can be followed in the beta area of elementary OS's Github page , but it's still early days. Whether there will be design changes in elementary OS 7 in connection with GTK4 has not yet been decided. Wayland support could also come in version 7.
A language assistant is not planned for version 7. GTK3 apps will also run and be used in version 7. But GTK4 apps might look different from GTK3 apps. That depends on the toolkit and its compatibility options. It is planned to realize dynamic background images. Overall there will be changes in the CSS display with GTK4. A large part of the video consists of demonstrating the upcoming changes to GTK4, including the option of widgets. The focus should be on cross-platform interfaces (APIs).
An elementary OS 7 Early Access version was shown in the video. Everything has been changed to Flatpak in the App Center. What is available in version 6 will also be available directly in version 7. Overall, you can tell that the development of OS 7 is still in its infancy. So few changes to OS 6 are currently visible.
As already started with version 6 , whoever pays gets access to these pre-release versions. However, it should be said that the image is defective at the current time and even if it is operable again, the pre-release versions are not suitable for day-to-day use.
There is no precise timetable for OS 7 yet. The developers are currently still working on OS 6. There will be a major update for OS 6 before the developers focus on OS 7. Although work on OS 7 has already started, it is not yet a priority.
My spontaneous wishes for elementary OS 7 are:
An upgrade wizard such as mintupgrade
Performance optimization for the Flatpak apps
Integration of Debian packages into the App Store
Expanded payment options beyond credit cards
Flatpak apps will continue receiving regular updates in perpetuity; this is the pay-off for adopting it for elementary OS and AppCenter!
Daily builds of our updated Flatpak runtime include everything developers need to start working with GTK4 today.
While early work is promising, it may or may not make the cut in time for the OS 7 release.
