Notes:
[1] I didn’t use ‘clinic’ for 问枢医馆 (Wenshu Medicine Hall) solely because of how I think ‘clinic’ is a term suited to a setting that is closer to a modern period and I wanted to try to highlight the traditional part of the place that resembles a traditional chinese medicine hall.
[2] NOT ME, I HATE THIS GUY THROUGH AND THROUGH BECAUSE HE’S SO STUPID T_T
[3] Judging from Vyn’s and MC’s attire based on the CG, the setting could happen somewhere around late 1920s to mid 1940s. It is also around this era that education for Western medicine started in China as industrialization influenced China more and more. While it’s merely around 2 to 3 decade of time, much have transitioned in China before its formation as PRC, that there was one point where TCM was about to be abolished (but was, thankfully ended without abolishment when medical law was created on March 1930 thanks to an immense amount of effort by people who voiced out back then). The use of “Dr.” here is solely because he’s likely a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner that also has knowledge of Western medicine, and since where people still address him as a doctor (also because of the background where it is in the form of a TCM medicine hall instead of industrialized-looking hospitals). Do feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
[4] Specifically in the style of Yan Zhenqing, a calligrapher from the Tang Dynasty. The unique point of this style lies in their light horizontal strokes and powerful vertical strokes. This way of writing was once revolutionary to Chinese literature.
[5] Based on 八正神明论篇第二十六 (Chapter 26: Eight Solar Terms and Medical Perspective) from the book 黄帝内经 (Huangdi Neijing). It’s an ancient Chinese medical text or group of texts that has been treated as a fundamental doctrinal source for Chinese medicine for more than two millennia. This line is specifically talking about methods of acupuncture and blood letting. 天寒无刺,天温无疑;月生无泻,月满无补 explains on the how timing, weather affects the patient’s “qi” and body condition. I don’t think I am qualified to translate TCM theories into English in order to not cause misunderstanding or mislead people, so I’m afraid I had to omit translating this part.
[6] Only read this if you enjoy angst!!! In the event for Enduring Light, Vyn told a very similar story in this card, stating that the doctor died in the story. So... WHAT IF... perhaps just like Blizzardous Threads of Red, this meeting could have been just… a hallucination by MC, where the 'almost burnt' book was probably something burnt along with cremation, and taking him out to have a stroll around might probably be his ashes instead? Have fun thinking and crying with me, good night :')
