Notes:
[1] While 花祈节 is translated as Flower Festival, it literally means 'flower prayer festival'. Since there's no spring in where I live, I'm not certain if this is a real festival or not.
[2] Beizhou means "Northern State".
[3] Xingmu (translated to gavel) is a commonly used prop in Chinese performances. It's a small piece of hard wood of quality with its main function is to make a sound to attract the audience's attention.
[4] I didn't translate 仙灵 to 'fairy' because fairy is more closely related to European folklores, and 仙灵 itself can be spiritual beings that went through centuries of spiritual practice, with a goal to become one of the divines. If they went to the wrong path in their practice, however, they will turn into monsters.
[5] The concept of 报恩 is very common in Chinese folklores. Someone does a good deed, and the one received the kindness will find their way to repay as a form of gratitude, often having the feeling of being indebted to the one gracing them with an act of kindness.
[6] 定北侯 (Dingbeihou/ Marquis Dingbei) is not a name, but a title given by the emperor. In this story, MC's father brought peace to Beizhou, hence given the title as "定北", which roughly means "secure the northern land".
[7] It was normal for performers (like opera, storytelling) to act or sing in both male and female roles, though not the case for every performer, of course, but it isn't rare.
[8] Chishui River is a major tributary of the upper Yangtze. Its name literally means "red water river"/"red river" because it shows reddish color in lower stream due to a large sediment concentration.
[9] The Gobi Desert is a vast, arid region in northern China and southern Mongolia.
[10] This came from a poem by 龚自珍, which means "the tiniest movements will affect the entire situation" - be careless for the slightest bit and you'll lose everything.
[11] This traces back to the spiritual practice of spiritual beings. Throughout their practice, they earn 修为, something accumulated over years of practice. It's said that for one to transform into human, thousands of years of cultivation are required.
[12] Usually, as subordinate (during that period) you are not allowed to address family members of your superior with their names.

[14] In Chinese religions we believe in reincarnation and it takes a long process that can't be helped so LOL
[15] QiXi is on the 7th day of the 7th month of lunar calendar. Qiaoguo is a delicate fried thin pastry where its shape comes in many curves. Qiao also sounds similar to 'bridge' in CN, so it has a romantic meaning (see Qixi's origins of Vega and Altair, magpie bridge). It became a way to express love between lovers.
[16] Mid-autumn festival is on the 15th day of the 8th month in lunar calendar.

*6 In SOTT cards and Artem's after story, the token of love 'disappears' after MC agreed to receive it. But, it didn't disappear here. Hence it could be MC's hallucinations.
Bonus angst: In lore of spiritual beings, loving a mortal and meddling with mortal matters are forbidden, and punishments are brutal. But Mo Yi did this for us. If Mo Yi can't even hold his serpent form from rescuing her, can he can shoulder the punishment of breaching the heavenly laws?
Bonus #2: The referenced poem is a poem where the poet blesses the lady to be happily married and build a family together with her spouse. It is a congratulatory poem. So after all the angst, please have some sweetness!
