Enjoy Maica N.'s review of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. In an exciting sequel to the first Shazam! movie in 2019, Shazam! Fury of the Gods brings some humor and a unique storyline to the big screen. It could have been more complete, but definitely has its moments to shine.
Still learning how to live normal teenage lives while having an adult superhero alter ego, Billy (Asher Angel) and his siblings at the foster home are facing challenges that come with growing up. If living two lives wasn’t hard enough, when a trio of ancient gods arrive on Earth to retrieve magic that was stolen from them, adult Billy (Zachary Levi) struggles to keep everyone together to fight back. In an attempt to save themselves, their powers, and the world, the gang finds themselves in an intense battle against the gods.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods has a storyline that’s easy to follow, but could use more development. The relationship between the three gods, Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) is an interesting dynamic. We see the oldest, Hespera, try to initiate and lead the plans. However, the middle sister, Kalypso, begins to realize that she wants more control over their lives and decisions. Anthea is still relatively young and doesn’t have as much experience as Hespera and Kalypso, so she feels conflicted as to whether she wants to be on their side, or the side of a boy she befriended, Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer). It is a highlight of the film to see the relationship between the sisters and the balance of power change. Despite Shazam! Fury of the Gods running over two hours, it still feels incomplete. There are many concepts introduced that don’t add to the plot. The timing is off as well, with the beginning taking quite long to get to the main point. The climax is not as interesting as it was projected and then it takes a while to resolve the movie. Shazam! Fury of the Gods has the right idea and has its highlights, such as the relationship between the kids changing as they are growing up. However, the plot is its weak point.
The message of Shazam! Fury of the Gods is that your family isn’t always related by blood. Even though Billy and his siblings aren’t related by blood, they still have each other's backs and fight for each other.
I give Shazam! Fury of The Gods 3.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18, plus adults. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is available in theaters now. Make sure you check it out! https://youtu.be/_U2_4Me_XDo
