Today I'll take you to ride at high altitude in an epic place, starting from Monte Maniva, we will head first to Dosso dei Galli, and then continue to Passo Crocedomini, all strictly on gravel!
The Dosso dei Galli is famous as the home of the NATO base called IDGZ which operated from 1969 to 1995 as part of the radio communications system called ACE High: using troposcatter and microwave transmission, a system of radio links extended from Norway to Turkey and provided encrypted telephone lines to NATO summits, as well as telegraph and data lines.
The summit and the surrounding area is also called, locally, radar (in reference to the former NATO radio station). In the months (and years) following the closure, the military station was plundered by vandals who removed documents and equipment mysteriously and suddenly left by the NATO military in the spring of '95. Furthermore, the antennas (when they were in operation) had a record: they were the only very long range antennas with a mosaic structure in the world. Currently the entire hill is owned by a company that intends to renovate the former base for various purposes.
