Escape from Alcatraz is a 1979 thriller film directed by Don Siegel and starring Clint Eastwood as Frank Morris, a notorious prison escapee who is sent to the maximum security prison of Alcatraz Island. There, he meets other inmates who share his desire for freedom, such as Doc (Roberts Blossom), a talented painter who mutilated himself to get out of solitary confinement, English (Paul Benjamin), a bitter librarian who educates Morris, and Charlie Butts (Larry Hankin), a nervous man who wants to join Morris’s escape plan. Morris also makes enemies with Wolf (Bruce M. Fischer), a violent convict who tries to kill him, and the warden (Patrick McGoohan), a cold and cruel man who rules the prison with an iron fist.

The film is based on the true story of the 1962 escape attempt by Morris and three other inmates, John and Clarence Anglin (Fred Ward and Jack Thibeau) and Allen West (unseen in the film). Using improvised tools such as nail clippers, spoons, and papier-mâché heads, they dig holes in their cells, crawl through the ventilation system, and reach the roof. From there, they use a homemade raft and life jackets to sail across the treacherous waters of the San Francisco Bay, hoping to reach the mainland. The film leaves their fate ambiguous, as they are never seen or heard from again.

Escape from Alcatraz is a gripping and realistic portrayal of life in one of the most infamous prisons in history.
