And so, we begin the final "main" stream of the year. I kind of wish I'd managed to get here sooner, simply because I've got a lot on my plate with regards to bonus streams this year. Considering I managed to do all of my bonus games next year, there's a part of me that really wants to repeat that feat, even if I rationally know that's probably not viable. I guess part of the problem stems from the fact that the people doing the nominating/voting keep asking me "so you promise to do all of these games this year?" And I have to weakly respond with, "I can't do that, but I promise I'll try to." Which is simultaneously the truth... but also a non-answer. I dunno, I'm probably overthinking things. I guess with how many times and the excruciating detail I've had to explain the various nomination and voting rules to them, it almost feels like a teacher-student relationship at this point, so that's probably where my guilt stems from.

Anyway, enough of that crap. Terranigma is considered the third (and by most accounts, "final") game in Quintet's loosely connected trilogy of Action RPGs for the Super Nintendo. I beat Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia -- the first two games of the batch -- the previous two years, so I guess that means I should be finished. However, some people count The Granstream Saga for the PS1 as an "unofficial" fourth game, but mileage may vary on that one. Still, I'm planning on playing that next year as well, just to round things out.

I have to say, I was sort of torn between two sets of expectations on this one at the start. Terranigma is generally held up by the retro gaming community as one of the biggest snubs to the North American video game market in its entire history, as the game released in both Japan and PAL territories, but not here... likely due to the fact that Enix's American branch had apparently shut down by the time the game would've released. Perhaps, it's due to that rarity in our part of the world that the game is held in such high regard, generally considered the best of the so-called "Quintet trilogy". KI actually revisited the game at the start of this year, to prepare himself to help me... and his reactions seemed quite different. He actually claimed it was the weakest game of the three. As for my personal opinions, well, I didn't get that far, but at the moment, I'd probably slate it being between Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia in terms of quality, with the former still being my favorite of the bunch so far. But hey, that could change.
